Calming the Storm

How many times have you prayed for God to calm the raging storm around you? Maybe your marriage was imploding. Perhaps you lost a pregnancy. You could be facing a medical scare, a dying loved one, financial trouble, or job loss. The truth is life is hard. We will all face difficulties, and no one comes out on the other side of life unscathed.

And sometimes, God does, in fact, calm the storm. Often, He closes one door to open a bigger and better door. Matthew 8:26 (ESV) says, “And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm.” And rest assured, friend – the waves and wind still know His name.

When He Doesn’t Calm the Storm

Raging Storm, Calm, Calming

But what about the times he doesn’t calm the storm? God will never give us more than we can handle, right? I mean, that’s what we’ve all been told our whole lives. Sadly, that is not true. God often gives us more than we can handle so that our only source of strength is Him. It’s in those times, especially, that we should lean into Christ and rely on His grace and power.

King David knew this better than most, saying, “The Lord is my strength and shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.”

King David understood that God doesn’t always calm the storm, but He will calm the child. Amid tumult and heartache, God provides us with inexplicable peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27 ESV).

Trust God for Peace

God will Give you Peace, Calm, Calming

While we won’t escape heartache, we can trust that we have a God who weaves all things together for our good and His glory. So take refuge in Jesus, friends, and take comfort in the peace amidst the storm.
