Why is reading important?

We’ve all heard that we can gain wisdom from the mistakes of others. But I would venture to say that a wise person can also learn from the adventures of others. We can find many adventures within the pages of quality books.

While many of us cannot engage in our old activities and entertainment habits, reading is more important than ever. Reading allows us to engage our brains regularly, and when we choose high-quality informational reading, we will continually learn and grow. Our minds are a muscle, and the more we use them, the stronger they get.

Why should we read to our children?

reading is important

The benefits of reading to your children are tremendous.  It supports cognitive development, improves language skills, increases concentration, discipline, imagination, and creativity. Reading to your children helps you develop a special bond with them and cements their lifelong love of reading.

Additionally, children pick up on social cues and ethics from books – another reason why it’s so important to choose high-quality books that reflect the values you wish to instill in your children. For example, it is difficult to expect your child to be respectful towards authority when taking in a steady diet of books with disrespectful and ill-willed characters.

How do I find high-quality books?

Services like Good Reads and What Should I Read Next help readers find literature highly recommended by other readers. These services will also recommend books based on your genre preferences or other books that you enjoyed!

Librarians are also an excellent resource. They usually tend to be big readers themselves and can often point you in the right direction.

Where can I find free or inexpensive books?

In the age of Libby, Overdrive, Hoopla, Audible, Christian Audio, Amazon, and more, we are in no shortage of immediate access to digital content. If you prefer paper books, the public library should be your go-to. Reading high-quality literature doesn’t need to be expensive!  Public libraries are free to card-holders and are full of invaluable resources. Additionally, many neighborhoods have Little Free Library locations where anyone can take a book or share a book. You can even build and register one in your community!

Why should I read?

As I mentioned above, reading opens our minds to situations, cultures, experiences, characters, and adventures we might never encounter otherwise. It grows our understanding of and empathy for the world and people around us. We don’t have to stop learning and growing if we open ourselves to a healthy reading habit.
